Altitude sickness usually effects people who are climbing above 2500m. It is always a good idea get gain altitude slowly - preferably over a few days if you are intending on exceeding this. The following medicines may help treat altitude sickness:

There are several types of meningitis which can affect travellers, including meningitis A, C, W, and Y. They are all types of meningococcal meningitis and are caused by bacteria. Compared to viral meningitis, bacterial meningitis is very dangerous and causes inflammation of the meningeal tissue surrounding the brain and spinal cord. Around 10% of meningitis patients can die of the infection, even with treatment.
The symptoms vary from person to person but usually the infection involves a severe headache, a high temperature and vomiting. Some patients also suffer from a stiff neck, are unusually sensitive to light and feel exhausted. The most typical symptom of meningitis is a skin rash, which occurs in many but not all cases.
The meningitis ACWY vaccine provides protection against all four meningitis types included in its name. It is particularly suitable for travellers who could be at risk of contracting one of these.
If you are planning to travel abroad, you need to check whether you will be entering a meningococcal meningitis risk area. It is particularly prominent in parts of Sub-Saharan Africa, an area sometimes referred to as the “meningitis belt”. Here, meningitis A is the most frequent cause of the illness, but there have been recent outbreaks of W, X and C.
The meningitis vaccine consists of one single dose, which is administered by injection. You should arrange an appointment with your pharmacist at least two to three weeks before the date of your departure.
It is recommended that students attending university for the first time, receive a single dose of Meningitis ACWY. There is currently a routine NHS vaccine programme for all children in year 9.
No boosters are currently required except for certificate purposes. Some countries, for example Saudi Arabia, demand that you provide a meningitis ACWY certificate prior to entering.
Please note that this does NOT protect you from meningitis B.

Meningococcal meningitis is caused by bacteria easily passed from person to person by coughing, sneezing, or kissing. It can cause serious complications and is potentially fatal. While more common in some countries outside the UK, the best way to protect yourself is to be vaccinated. The vaccine may even be required in advance for some travel.
Book a consultation and our pharmacist can advise you on whether this vaccination is right for you. The price quoted is for your consultation and one dose of vaccine – you will need two or potentially three doses (dependent on your circumstance) of this vaccine, at least a month apart.

These are highly infectious conditions that can have serious or potentially fatal outcomes, such as deafness, meningitis or swelling of the brain (encephalitis). Children have been routinely vaccinated against them since the vaccine was introduced in 1988. Outbreaks don’t happen very often in the UK but it is still important to keep your vaccine status up to date.
Many people have heard the myth that vaccines like the MMR vaccine have been linked to autism. This was due to one study that was completely discredited, written by a man who was stripped of his license to practice medicine in the UK. Since this study almost 20 years ago, no other study has shown this link to exist. Please do not avoid getting vaccinated as there is no such risk involved.
Start your course at least six weeks before travelling. You need two doses, with minimum a four week gap in between, and your second dose needs to be completed at least two weeks before travelling, making six weeks total. If you also require a Yellow Fever vaccine, you should have ideally a four-week gap between this and your MMR. This may also apply to a chickenpox vaccine and tuberculosis test, they should be done on the same day as MMR or allow a 4 week gap.
The vaccine can be taken from 12 months (9 months old in some cases), but we only provide this service to those over 18. The price you will be quoted is for your consultation and a single dose of vaccine.

Our period delay service allows women to postpone and control when their period starts for times when a menstruation would be inconvenient, such as when they are going on holiday.
Norethisterone is a synthetic form of the hormone progesterone. Rather than allowing for the natural fall in progesterone during your period, norethisterone keeps your progesterone levels elevated. This delays the shedding of your womb lining, and therefore delays your period. Take one 5mg tablet, three times a day, starting three days before your expected period.
The price quoted is for your consultation and for a course of 30 tablets (taken for 10 days) which would be suitable for a week-long delay. We can supply up to a 2-week delay (for 14 days plus the 3 days prior to expected onset of period) for an additional fee. Menstruation usually occurs within 3 days of finishing the course of norethistorone.
This service is only suitable for females over the age of 16 who are not pregnant or breast-feeding and not on any kind of oral contraceptives. Liver disease, epilepsy and psychiatric disorders would also exclude you from using this treatment. For full details please contact the pharmacy.

Rabies vaccines are given to prevent infection prior to travelling to a high-risk area. It is also used to prevent the illness from spreading to the nervous system after an animal bite. As medical treatment is not always readily available in countries with a high risk, you may need to protect yourself with a rabies injection before leaving the country.
The pre-exposure rabies vaccine is administered with an intramuscular injection and consists of three doses. The three doses need to be given within a specific period, so you should begin the treatment at least one month before travelling. You will receive the second dose 7 days after the first, the third dose should be received on the 28th day. If there isn’t enough time then the third dose can be administered on the 21st day.
The price quoted is for your consultation and one dose of vaccine – a full course is three doses unless you have had a course of vaccination before. A 10% discount is available if you purchase the whole course up front - please speak to one of our pharmacists if you would like to arrange this.
Rabies vaccination is not available on the NHS.
The rabies vaccine protects you for 10 years. If you are working with animals or are otherwise at a higher risk, more frequent boosters may be recommended.

The Sore Throat Test and Treat scheme allows patients who have a sore throat to have a consultation with a pharmacist to assess what kind of condition they have. Around 90% of sore throats are caused by a viral infection which will usually get better on its own after a few days. We can advise on appropriate treatments to manage the pain if this is the case.
If, however, we suspect that there may be a bacterial cause to your condition, we can swab the back of the throat and test it. This will reveal whether there is a bacterial infection present and if so, we can supply a course of antibiotics to treat the condition. This service is only available to patients aged 6 years and above.
If you have any questions about this service, please contact the pharmacy.

Travellers’ diarrhoea is a common complaint, which can be caused by bacteria, viruses, and protozoa. Many travellers experience diarrhoea at some point during their travels when visiting high risk countries in South America, Africa, or Asia. Most diagnosed cases of travellers’ diarrhoea are caused by bacteria, and they are transmitted via contaminated food or drink. Symptoms usually clear up without treatment. However, if you experience severe symptoms while travelling, or your symptoms don’t improve within three days, you need to seek medical advice.
Travellers who are planning to visit high risk regions for travellers’ diarrhoea, and who will be unable to access medical help during their trip, may be advised to take medication with them to be able to treat the condition if they catch it.
The price quoted is for your consultation and for a three-day course of antibiotic tablets that can be taken with you on your travels for if it is needed.

Typhoid fever is caused by a bacterium called Salmonella typhi. It is a highly contagious and potentially lethal disease, which spreads via contaminated foods and water. As typhoid bacteria are primarily found in faeces, the infection is particularly common in regions with poor sanitation. Typical symptoms include a high temperature, headaches, nausea, muscle pain, digestion problems such as constipation or diarrhoea, tiredness, and confusion.
There are two different typhoid vaccines available in the UK. One is administered orally, the other consists of a single-dose intramuscular injection. The oral vaccine consists of three capsules, which need to be taken on alternate days. This type of vaccine is not suitable for people with a weak immune system and is not recommended for children.
The price quoted is for your consultation and for one injection or three capsules (both of these provide a full course of treatment) and is effective for three years.

Yellow fever is a viral infection transmitted by mosquitoes, typically in tropical regions of Africa and South America. The virus can cause symptoms ranging from mild fever and muscle pain to severe illness with jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes), bleeding, and organ failure.
The yellow fever vaccine is a highly effective, single-dose vaccine that provides lifelong immunity in most people. It is recommended for travelers to high-risk areas and required by some countries for entry. The vaccine is generally safe, but it may have rare side-effects, especially in people with weakened immune systems or certain medical conditions.
Here at Mendus and Pembroke Castle Pharmacies, we can provide the vaccine and appropriate certification.

Tick-borne encephalitis is a viral infection endemic to many European countries and can cause serious complications, such as inflammation of the brain. If you are planning to stay in an area with a high occurrence of infected ticks, a TBE vaccination is the safest way of avoiding the infection. It is particularly relevant if you are planning to spend a lot of time outdoors.
The course consists of three doses. The second dose is given 1 – 3 months after the first. The third dose is given 5 – 12 months after the second dose.
